How Discord Permission Integers Work (Bitwise Math in Plain Words)
Discord manages dozens of different permissions for roles and bots. Instead of saving every single permission as text, Discord stores them all inside a single large number called a bitwise integer.
Every permission has a specific number that doubles each step: Create Instant Invite is 1, Kick Members is 2, Ban Members is 4, and Administrator is 8. When you turn on both Kick (2) and Ban (4), Discord adds their binary bits together to make 6.
Because computers use binary arithmetic, no two combinations ever produce the same total. This allows Discord servers to read your bot invite link and know the exact permissions you chose in a split second.
Why You Should Never Give Administrator Permission Carelessly
The Administrator permission (value 8) overrides every channel-level lock in your server. A bot with Administrator can delete channels, ban all members, read secret staff channels, and alter server settings.
Many server owners tick Administrator simply because it saves time. However, if that bot developer gets hacked or their private bot token leaks online, malicious users can seize control of your community and wipe it completely.
Always follow the principle of least privilege. Give bots only the specific permissions they need to perform their daily duties, such as sending messages or joining voice channels.
Recommended Permission Sets for Common Discord Bots
Use these recommended permission combinations to keep your server safe while ensuring your bots function smoothly:
1. Moderation Bots
Moderation bots need permissions like Kick Members, Ban Members, Manage Messages, View Audit Log, and Read Message History.
They do not need Administrator or Manage Server. Check out our Dyno Setup Guide for auto-mod configurations.
2. Music & Radio Bots
Music bots only require Connect, Speak, Use Voice Activity, and Send Messages in chat for commands.
Never give a music bot permissions to manage roles or kick members. Read our Jockie Music Guide for safe setup.
3. Support Ticket Bots
Ticket bots require Manage Channels to open private ticket rooms, plus Send Messages, Embed Links, and Attach Files.
